The issue has been the subject of sustained public debate for years, with many Moroccans criticizing GMT+1 for disrupting daily life, particularly during winter when children often travel to school before sunrise. Calls to restore GMT have repeatedly resurfaced and became one of the country’s most persistent public demands.

Akhannouch, cited in a statement following the government council in 25th June, said the decision followed consultations and took into account concerns expressed by citizens over the years, acknowledging the difficulties created by the current system. The move fulfills a demand that many Moroccans have been making for nearly a decade.
